VIJAY K. VAISHNAVI

Biographical Sketch

Vijay Vaishnavi is Professor at the Department of Computer Information Systems, J. Mack Robinson College of Business, and Professor of Computer Science, Georgia State University, Atlanta. He is known for his work on object modeling of knowledge based systems (smart object model), formal/informal software specifications, efficient data structures (balanced multidimensional search trees), and computational geometry. His current projects include directory services project, enabling virtual communitiescoordination of workflow systems (funded by the National Science Foundation), software quality, safety, and reliability through mature use of formal specifications, software development process modeling, and object-oriented metrics. He has been a consultant to various companies and organizations including IBM, AT&T, Bell Northern Research, and the National Science Foundation. He is a co-founder of Comsoft:  Consortium for the Management of Emerging Software Technologies and has been its Research Director. He was a Workshop and Program Co-Chair of the 1997 Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems (WITS '97), Conference Co-Chair for the first three annual Comsoft conferences on Object Technology Centers (1995-97), and Program Committee Co-Chair for the 1991 TOOLS (Technology for Object-Oriented Languages and Systems) USA Conference. He was also a Co-Chair for the 1994 and 1995 OOPSLA Workshops on "Role of Object Technology Centers."

Dr. Vaishnavi is an IEEE Fellow.  He has published extensively and his research has been published in such journals as IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Computers, SIAM Journal on Computing, Journal of Algorithms, Journal of Computer and System Sciences, Computer Graphics and Image Processing, Acta Informatica, and Communications of the ACM. He is an author of the book, Object Technology Centers of Excellence, with Timothy D. Korson (Manning Publications/Prentice-Hall). He was a Co-Guest Editor for the September 1992 Special Issue of the Communications of the ACM on "Modeling and Analysis in Software Development."  He has also been a Co-Guest Editor for Decision Support Systems and DATA BASE journalsHe is currently a Departmental Editor of DATA BASE, an Associate Editor for Information Technology and Management, and on the Editorial Board of Information Systems Frontiers..

Prior to his current position, Dr. Vaishnavi has been on the faculties of the Computer Science Departments of Ohio University, Concordia University (Canada), and Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (I.I.T. Kanpur).  He received a BE with Distinction in Electrical Engineering from J&K University (India), an M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from I.I.T. Kanpur, and a Ph.D. from I.I.T. Kanpur (1976).  He was a postdoctoral fellow at McMaster University (Canada), 1977-79.
